This SEO tips list is for self-employed and small and local businesses who want to improve their visibility in search engines.

  • Write unique titles for every page within 55 characters.
  • Write unique meta descriptions for every page within 160 characters.
  • Research keywords using Google’s keyword tool before optimising for them. Target relevant keywords and keep in mind that more than 40% of searches are comprised of 4 or more words so don’t forget about the long tail keywords. Add them in URL, page title, meta description, header tags and image alt tags. Target one keyword per page only and don’t forget about the keyword density.
  • Internal linking. Most important pages should have direct link from your homepage.
  • Add your address and phone number to all your pages if you’re targeting keyword phrases that contain your city name.
  • Get listed in your industry and local directories and ask your customers to leave reviews on these local directories and on Google+.
  • Add social sharing buttons on your website and include social media as part of your SEO strategy.
  • Add the website on Google Webmaster Tools twice, with both www and without www and set your preferred domain. Set up 301 redirects and a 404 error page.
  • Use Google Analytics to find our what keywords are using your visitors and what pages they visit, besides knowing how many visitors your website gets.
  • Add your business on Google Business and verify it.
  • Follow the Google guidelines via Webmaster Guidelines and Webmaster Help Videos.
  • Optimize your images, use WP Smush plugin and include the page’s target keyword and its variations in the file names and image alt tags on all the images on a page.
  • Optimize your website for mobile users and maximize your website’s loading speed by using Google’s site speed tool and follow their recommendations.
  • Backup your website regularly, a good WordPress plugin is UpDraftPlus.
  • Conduct a competitive research to find out what the sites, ranking on the first page for your keywords, have done to get there.
  • Remove duplicate content, add a blog on your website and keep publishing on a regular basis.
  • Get your customers talking about you by being excellent and/or offering a discount if they bring their freinds to you website.
  • Interview experts in your field, create and mantain a Facebook community and find out what forums drives traffic to your site from your industry.
  • Build an email list to drive traffic to your website, one of the four pillars of internet marketing.
  • Answer questions about your niche and get traffic back to your website from answer sites. Alpha Answerly is a search engine for answer sites.
  • If your story is newsworthy tell the world via press releases sites.
  • Advertise on TV
  • RSS is great for getting your content out there.
  • Create videos and syndicate them, there are hundreds of video websites, get your videos out there.
  • Create slides or graphics from articles or presentations and upload them with your website address.
  • Publish content on Web 2.0 sites with huge traffic such as HubPages and secure your brandname on main the social sites.
  • Make product with your name on it, CafePress for instance.
  • Get your site on DMOZ and Yahoo directory.
  • Give away something that cost you nothing from your business, create also an affiliate program – after all why not get others to sell you services and send traffic to your blog?!
  • Check your local charities, causes or local sports teams and sponsor something to drive traffic to your website. Review products on your website for the same reason.
